Weighing a commercial vehicle is deceptively simple to describe and surprisingly hard to do well at scale. A truck rolls onto a scale, a load cell reports a number, and someone writes it down. The trouble starts everywhere after that number: getting it off the scale reliably, attaching it to the right vehicle and the right job, making it available to an office that may be a thousand miles away, and proving — months later, to an auditor or a customer — that the figure was real and unaltered.

The A1SI Commercial Vehicle Weighing System (CVWS) exists to handle everything after the number. This post walks through how it does that, and why the architecture looks the way it does.

From load cell to record

CVWS reads weight from Laumas CLM8 load cells — the industrial sensor that sits under the scale deck and converts force into a digital signal. Getting that signal into modern software is the first real engineering problem, because the load cell speaks an industrial protocol over a serial bus, not HTTP.

That is where A1SI's wireless connectivity work comes in. Rather than tether the scale to a wired PC, CVWS uses a small bridge that reads the load cell's Modbus traffic and relays it over Bluetooth Low Energy to a phone, tablet, or fixed gateway. The operator on the ground gets a live reading on a native app; the same reading travels onward to the cloud. No laptop on a clipboard, no transcription step where a digit can flip.

One platform, three surfaces

CVWS is not an app or a dashboard — it is a platform that presents the same data on three surfaces, each chosen for who is looking and where they stand.

  • The native iOS and Android apps are for the yard: the person at the scale who needs a fast, glanceable weight and a way to tag it to a vehicle and job without typing on a cold morning.
  • The live web dashboard is for the office: dispatch, billing, and operations staff who need to see weights across every site as they happen, run totals, and pull a record when a customer calls.
  • The multi-tenant cloud platform underneath is for the business: the layer that keeps each organization's data isolated, supports multiple sites under one account, and scales from a single scale to a fleet of them.

Building all three from one platform — rather than three disconnected tools — is what keeps a weight taken in the yard and the invoice generated in the office referring to the same source of truth.

Why "compliance" is in the name

Commercial weighing is a regulated activity. Overweight vehicles carry real legal and safety consequences, and the weight on a ticket can become evidence. That puts a quiet but firm requirement on the software: a weight record has to be trustworthy after the fact, not just accurate in the moment.

CVWS treats the weight record as something to preserve, not just display. Readings are captured at the source and carried through the system with their context — which scale, which vehicle, which job, when. The aim is that a number pulled from the dashboard six months later tells the same story it told the day it was weighed.
